Why a card discount may not work

A checklist to run before and after paying.

Why would a restaurant refuse my bank card discount?

Usually one condition in the offer was not met: the card tier, branch, day, minimum spend, order mode, an exclusion or a usage limit. A headline percentage rarely tells the whole story. The checklist below covers the common causes. These are general reasons, not a statement about any particular bank.

What should I check?

  • Was it the exact card tier?

Offers are often limited to specific products, such as one credit card tier, and may not cover another tier or a debit card from the same bank.

  • Was it the right branch?

Many offers apply only to listed outlets. A restaurant can have several branches where only some take part.

  • Was it the right day and time?

Some offers run only on certain weekdays or hours, or have a start and end date.

  • Was the minimum spend met?

A minimum eligible bill can apply, and it may be counted before or after tax and service charge.

  • Was the order mode covered?

Dine-in, takeaway and delivery are often treated differently. An offer for dine-in may not apply to a delivery order.

  • Were items or charges excluded?

Tax, service charge, beverages, set deals or items already on promotion can be excluded from the discounted amount.

  • Had a transaction limit been reached?

Offers can limit the number of uses per card per month, or the total discount, so a cap or count may already be used up.

  • Was the card network or PayPak requirement met?

Some offers apply only to a particular network, or require the payment to be made on that card rather than another one.

  • Is it an instant discount or cashback?

An instant discount reduces the bill at the counter. Cashback is usually credited later and may take time to appear, so it will not show on the receipt.

What can I do about it?

  1. Ask before ordering. Tell the staff which card you will use and ask whether the offer applies to your branch, day and order type.
  2. Check the terms. Open the bank's own discount page and read the conditions for your exact card.
  3. Contact your bank if the terms say it should have applied. Keep the receipt and the date.
  4. Tell us. If a listing here was wrong or out of date, report a correction.
